BATURA WURTHUM PASS TREK
The Batura Werthum Pass Trek is a captivating high-altitude adventure in the Karakoram Range of northern Pakistan. This trek traverses the Batura Glacier—the fourth-longest glacier in Pakistan—and crosses the seldom-visited Werthum Pass, offering a blend of dramatic landscapes, cultural encounters, and mountaineering challenges. Werthum Pass, meaning "millstone" in the Wakhi language, is a non-glaciated pass that connects the Batura Glacier to the Lupgar Valley. The trek follows the northern edge of the Batura Glacier, offering views of peaks like Shishpar (7,611m), Passu Peak (7,284m), and the Batura Wall. The ascent involves navigating slopes of 20–25 degrees and a permanent 3–4m vertical cornice on the north side. Before mid-July, the cornice can be more challenging due to heavier snow, necessitating the use of rope belays and ice-cutting techniques. While not technically demanding, the crossing requires proper acclimatization and basic mountaineering equipment. The route also provides insights into the traditional.
