Climbers roped up on a Karakoram peak in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
Peak Royalty Fees

Why two climbers on the same peak can pay two different fees

Royalty isn't a flat number stamped on a peak name — it moves with altitude band, season, team size and district. Here's the logic behind the figure you'll eventually be quoted.

The Fee Ladder

Five bands, one rule: higher summit, higher tier

Figures move every year when the GB Tourism Department renotifies them, so we're showing tiers rather than numbers that would be stale within a season. Ask us for the confirmed current rate once your peak is chosen.

What actually moves your number up or down

Pushes the fee up

  • Choosing a summer season slot
  • Team larger than the base-rate headcount
  • A peak in the 8,000m+ band

Brings the fee down

  • Climbing between December and February
  • Selected peaks in Gilgit or Ghizer districts
  • Staying within the base team headcount

Fee questions we get most

Season and team size both move the total — a winter slot and a team inside the base headcount both pull the number down.

After. It's settled once the climbing permit clears, not at the time of initial application.

No — royalty fees are tied to climbing permits for peaks above 6,500m. Trekking-only routes may still owe a separate trekking fee, which is a different charge.
