Ski in Shimshal Valley-Hunza
Shimshal Valley, located in the extreme north of Hunza Valley, Pakistan, is one of the country’s most remote areas, bordering China. Access is via a 53 km jeep road from the Karakoram Highway (KKH) at Passu, which follows the narrow gorge of the Shimshal River. The main village sits at an elevation of 3,100 meters in the Karakoram Range, with a population of approximately 1,400 Wakhi speakers. Accessible by jeep since October 2003, Shimshal is known for its rich culture and offers opportunities to interact with the local population.
The valley is a premier destination for backcountry skiing and ski mountaineering, attracting experienced skiers with its pristine snow and rugged terrain. Skiing is viable from late December to April, with options including a small peak at 6,050 meters where summer skiing is possible.
Boesam Pass Area:
Boesam Pass, at 4,999 meters (16,400 feet) north of Shimshal, is known for its challenging ski routes, including steep couloirs and open slopes. It is less frequented but offers potential for rewarding expeditions. The southwest face of Yawash Sar II (6,176m), successfully skied by a Polish team in 2022, features a 35–45 degree slope, appealing to skilled mountaineers.
The typical journey begins in Shimshal, requiring a multi-day trek to establish a base camp in the Ghidims Valley. Due to its remote location and technical terrain, the area is best suited for experienced skiers with skills in glacier travel and avalanche safety.
