Ski in Snow Lake- Biafo

Skiing in Snow Lake (also known as Lukpe Lawo) is an extraordinary adventure set in the heart of Pakistan’s Karakoram range. At approximately 4,877 meters (16,000 feet) above sea level, Snow Lake is a vast glacial basin about 16 kilometres wide, situated at the confluence of the Biafo and Hispar glaciers. These glaciers form one of the longest continuous ice systems outside the polar regions, stretching over 117 kilometres. Snow Lake offers pristine ski touring routes with unparalleled views, making it a dream destination for expert backcountry skiers. The terrain includes steep descents, icefalls, and crevasses, requiring advanced skills in glacier navigation and mountaineering. The best time for skiing here is late spring (March to May), when snow conditions are optimal. Winter months (December to February) are possible but present increased challenges due to harsher weather and avalanche risks.
The journey typically begins in Skardu, accessible by plane or jeep from Islamabad. From Skardu, travellers jeep through the Braldu Gorge to the village of Askole. The trek from Askole initially follows the K2 Base Camp trail before turning northwest up the Biafo Glacier towards Snow Lake.
The expedition is strenuous, requiring excellent physical condition and
acclimatization to high altitudes. Proficiency in glacier travel, crevasse rescue, and high-altitude skiing is essential. Due to the remote nature of Snow Lake, it's crucial to plan for self-sufficiency, including carrying all necessary gear and supplies. Embarking on a ski expedition to Snow Lake is a challenging yet rewarding endeavour, offering unparalleled experiences in one of the world's most remote and
breathtaking alpine environments.
