Ski in Naltar Valley
Naltar, located in the Northern Areas of Gilgit in the Karakoram Range, is one of Pakistan’s oldest ski resorts, situated at an altitude of 3,100 meters. It is accessible via a 40 km jeepable road from Gilgit, leading through Nomal Village. The Naltar Highway is completed, but a 4x4 vehicle is recommended due to snow and road conditions.
Managed by the Pakistan Air Force, Naltar is known for its powder snow and scenic views. While infrastructure is limited, it attracts experienced skiers with 400-meter ski slopes. Permission from the Air Force is needed for access.
In winter, most hotels are closed, but a couple remain open, and camping is an option. Naltar’s popularity as a winter sports destination is growing each year.
To reach Naltar from Islamabad, you can take the Karakoram Highway, which is generally open in winter, or a one-hour flight to Gilgit, although flights are often subject to weather conditions. Alternatively, you can fly to Skardu, which has more operational flights, and then drive 4 hours to Gilgit. Snowfall typically occurs from December to late February or early March, so keep alternative options in mind due to changing snow conditions.
