Ski in Kuksil Valley- Khunjerab
Kuksil Valley, located near the Khunjerab Pass in Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan region, is recognized for its challenging climbing routes and stunning alpine beauty. While not a conventional skiing destination, its high-altitude terrain and untouched snowfields offer opportunities for experienced backcountry skiing.
Key peaks include Kuksil 5 (5,870 meters), visible from the Karakoram Highway, and Jacky Chhish (5,717 meters), both explored during a 2011 expedition led by Krzysztof Wielicki. Peaks below 6,500 meters do not require climbing permits, making them accessible for climbers. A No Objection Certificate (NOC) from local authorities is needed for access, which can typically be obtained in 2-3 days.
The prime skiing season spans mid-December to early March, with good conditions also in April and May. The valley features numerous peaks for skiing and climbing, many of which remain unclimbed. The terrain offers a range of challenges, from steep granite walls to glacier traverses, and requires thorough planning due to its remote location and lack of infrastructure.
