Explore Hunza Ruby Mines
Ruby belongs to the corundum mineral family and is closely related to sapphire. It is a rare gem due to the limited availability of chromium pigments in the Earth's crust. The combination of chromium with alumina during crystallization produces the ruby's vibrant red color. Traditionally, rubies were primarily sourced from Burma, but recent discoveries in Pakistan and Afghanistan may provide high-quality alternatives, particularly from Pakistan, where smaller stones can match the best Burmese colors.
Mines in Hunza Valley:
Local markets are bustling with various gemstones from Gilgit-Baltistan, particularly Hunza rubies. In Peshawar, most gemstones come from northern regions. Local miners extract stones from different mines in the Hunza Valley and sell them to local markets or agents, who then distribute them to Gilgit, Peshawar, and international markets. There are gem-cutting centers in Karimabad and Gilgit.
Previously, "Global Mining" operated in Ahmedabad but has stopped working. The Pakistan Minerals Development Corporation (PMDC) also operated in Ganish and Ahmedabad from 1974 to 1978. Reports suggest that the rubies from Ahamedabad are of good color and hardness compared to other ruby-bearing areas in Hunza.
